Affirmative Action?
Q. Help with a paper that is recommending a company's board of directors that affirmative action policies be implemented. Include points supporting the recommendation and clearly address points that may be used against this recommendation. The paper should also address how affirmative action policy will relate to compliance with equal employment opportunity law. Thanks

affirmative action?
Q. I'm doing a research paper on affirmative action and I am writing about why affirmative action is UNFAIR. But, I am having a difficult time finding statistics about the dropout rates of students who got into a university with the help of affirmative action. Also, any additional information about how affirmative action has hurt students would be great! Also, please include the website? thanks so much!

What myths about affirmative action do you believe?
Q. Myth 1: The only way to create a color-blind society is to adopt color-blind policies. Although this statement sounds intuitively plausible, the reality is that color-blind policies often put racial minorities at a disadvantage. For instance, all else being equal, color-blind seniority systems tend to protect White workers against job layoffs, because senior employees are usually White because of historical discrimination. Likewise, color-blind college admissions favor White students because of their earlier educational advantages. Unless preexisting inequities are corrected or otherwise taken into account, color-blind policies do not correct racial injustice -- they reinforce it. Myth 2: Affirmative action has not succeeded in… [cont.]

A. Regarding Myth 1: ---"senior employees are usually White because of historical discrimination." --- I doubt there are the same senior employees as there were 30 years ago, if they're even alive. Many men/women of all races rise the ranks due to hard work and determination (black men/women included). ---"color-blind college admissions favor White students because of their earlier educational advantages" --- This is positively absurd. Public school has made it where all kids can go to school starting at a very young age (kindergarten) and if schooling is bad in that region, it hurts all races and genders, not just one or two particular groups. And things such as AP classes and IB classes in some areas can be achieved by any and all races… [cont.]

How prevelant is affirmative action these days in terms of applying to universities?
Q. Is affirmative action legal? A school-mate who is a minority with a relatively lower academic reocord than mine got into a college that I applied for (I am white). (We applied for the same majors at MIT)
Asked by Samantha W - Thu Apr 3 02:05:31 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I am a minority myself and I must admit, affirmative action allowed me to get into prestigious schools that I otherwise would not have gotten into if I were white. Yes, I am valedictorian, ranked 1st and my class and have a 5.0 gpa, but other than that, I have quite mundane extracurriculars and only average SAT scores.

Q. Please please help me in answering this question as it has become very difficult for me. The problem is that I know what is Affirmative Action and what is descriptive statistics but I am unable to find the relationship between the two. Thanks a lot in advance for your cooperation.

A. Affirmative Action is a policy intended to admit minority students and students from disadvantaged backgrounds (potentially) over more qualified students who are not of color or who are economically privileged. Desriptive statistics are quantities like mean, standard deviation, and other numbers that describe or characterize a distribution of scores, values, measurements, whatever. The first is a policy used in social engineering. The second is a class of metrics obtained from numerical computations. Results from the second can 'feed into' the first in helping to guide affirmative action policies.

A. For females, it has increased enrollment in universities so well that they are no longer the minority, but the majority. It has benefited males in the sense that there is more diversity in the University system.

A. Affirmative action plans only apply to public (meaning government) employers and contracts. For example, an affirmative action policy can state that a city needs to award more contracts to minority-run and -owned businesses, BUT, it can't tell those private businesses to hire more minorities.

What is affirmative action, who does it benefit, and is it still in practice today?
Q. I heard people talk about affirmative action in school one day. As I was listening, I heard that some people believe it was discriminatory because it favored certain groups of people. These people were white. The people for affirmative action were not white and ranged from Hispanic, black, or Arab/middle east. Unfortunately, I was too shy to ask what this whole thing was about. So does anyone know what this is? Does it help certain groups of people, and if so, which ones? Additionally, is affirmative action still in practice today? Is it still a "hot" topic in America? Does it relate to advantages in the workplace? Higher Education?

A. Affirmative action only benefits lazy, stupid and unmotivated minorities. If you're a minority which has worked hard and is deserving of the job/position, this hurts you. Your resume means nothing, your education means nothing, your work history means nothing.. because it's so hard to tell if you were just an "affirmative action hire" or if you were good at what you do. It hurts society as a whole, because we're not always putting the best people in key positions.

How come you never hear of Asian Americans receiving affirmative action?
Q. Ever heard of an Asian-American needing affirmative action to get into UC Berkeley? Let's face it, the vast majority of affirmative action policies are there to cater to blacks and Hispanics to a lesser extent. As a Chinese American myself, I don't understand why more whites aren't more vocal about this favoritism that discourages competitiveness. Sure, maybe we don't experience as much discrimination, but the majority of us are immigrants who arrive with less money than blacks who have been here for hundreds of years.

A. Well, actually, Asians have the biggest discrimination in corporate america when it comes to skilled jobs. They have the highest qualifications out of college, yet, the lowest rate of employment (Asian men). Asian women are opposite, they are the most favored group among white men when it comes to employment and promotion (but we all know what they have to do to get those promotions). That's why we see sooo many Asian men operating stores and small businesses. White men discriminate them by far the most. They never complain about it because they accept racism as a reality and know the only way out is by independent efforts. Asians also do not qualify as a minority which makes it hard for them when it comes to entry level jobs and… [cont.]

A. I benefit from affirmative action for my latino ethnicity. I benefit from getting more government grants for school and mortgage loans etc. I even get an extra point on a test for employment. But I do not agree with affirmative action. It is not an equal system just because I am a minority I get the upper hand over the majority? Say I get a lower score on a test for a police officer position and a caucasian has the higher score I get the job even though he did better then I did just because of my latino orgins where is the equality in that?

A. Affirmative Action is still required for US Government contractors who do at least $50K of business with the US Government and have 50 or more employees. However, you need to be clear about what Affirmative Action is in this case. It is not, as some people believe, a quota system for minorities. It is an awareness of what the qualified work force is in a given geographical area which is further divided into the types of jobs employers have (manual labor, management, professionals, technicians, etc.). This information is gathered on an annual basis and compared to the company's work force. If there are obvious under-representations, then the company needs to look at that area it serves as a notice that some action by the company is… [cont.]
