Do you think that there is ageism in showbusiness?
Q. I am doing a project and I'm trying to show the ageism in our society and even in our performance arts. If you are over the age 60, what are your feelings on ageism and how do you think we portray aging in out society?

A. Imo ageism is much more directed towards women (in show business in particular) until they reach a certain age at which point both sexes seem to suffer equal discrimination. There is the old saying that 'Men mature' and women age. Men like Sean Connery can be considered a sex-symbol at 65 but there are far fewer women than men that are still considered 'sexy' when they reach 65. I'm not saying that everyone thinks the same way but it's something that I've noticed in the media, the way the sexes are perceived as they age. Western culture (imo) has far less respect for it's aging population than in many other cultures where the elderly are revered for their experience and wisdom. For example in Turkish culture and Japanese and many… [cont.]

What's with the ageism against teenagers and young adults?
Q. I've noticed on this site and in real life a real growth in this feeling that my generation is inadequate. It seems that so many people think that the next round of college students will only be there to party and that everyone in my generation is looking for the easy way out. We're being accused of being lazy individuals with no ambition, who will lie, cheat, and steal to get what we want the easy way and who have no concept of how the world really works. So I have a few questions: 1.) What makes older generations think that the majority of us are failures? 2.) A. 1. I don't believe that the majority of "us" think that the majority of "you" are failures. I *do*, however, think that a good percentage of "you" think that your achievements to date rival those of people 10, 20, or even 40 years your senior. No exaggeration... In our society do you think Ageism is confided only to the elderly ?
Q. Just looking for different opinions to write my paper . Thanks to all who are willing to answer..

A. Ageism begins very subtly. Capitalisistic commercialism is constantly looking for chinks by which it can exploit your fears and anxieties in order to profit by it. Adverts for better skin tone creams, anti wrinkle creams, supplements clothes etc. begin to impinge upon you from the age of about 30. Teenage models are held up to be the epitome of perfection. If you don't look like this you are 'old'. So ageism isn't just confined to those over 50, 60, 70 etc, it begins as soon as you leave your teens and increases incessantly from that time on.

Why is it that blatant sexism and ageism are allowed in the presidential race if it is being said by a liberal?
Q. Barack Obama was quoted as saying "You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change." Yet any negative comment about Obama is banned or attacked, even if it is a legitimate concern. Why is there a double standard, where liberals are allowed to blatantly discriminate?

A. Because it is politically acceptable for black people to say whatever about anyone they choose. It will change though. People will get tired of the double standard.

Why is racism against Obama wrong, but ageism against McCain is permitted?
Q. I'm not against racism, far from it. I'm just wondering why one form of prejudice is frowned on while another form is given the green light.

A. The sad fact of the matter is that as people age, they become less capable of performing well at complex and demanding jobs. Most CEO's retire long before the age of 72, and the President's job is much more difficult and crucial. On the other hand, race itself has no bearing on performance.

What should be added in a introductory book, for new care worker to stop discrimination against ageism?
Q. what instructions should be added for a new care worker, whos just started work, what should be instructed to them that informs them to treat all ages fairly and stop discrimination against ageism
Asked by live2damaxmax - Wed Jan 20 15:39:57 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. An introductory to a book usually is a short description of what the book is about but also describes something about the author and why they chose to write the book. It also is usually NOT written by the author and is usually written by someone who admires them or is also an expert on the topic or they ask to do so. Good luck. Happy 2010!!!

Q. remembering where his houses are located? Do you think that the Government's proposed plan to close small rural Post Offices is just a form of ageism?
Q. Considering that a lot of the people who use the smaller rural post offices are the very elderly, who cannot use public transport (due to their infirmities) and do not have the internet, is it not these very people who need the local Post Office, often in the village shop where they buy their groceries? This question is aimed at UK residents. I do not know what is happening in the USA but it would appear to have similar problems to here. Thanks for your viewpoints.

A. I think that is a very well thought out question. Transport and internet access for older people in rural areas are both serious problems. Not to mention the fact that post offices are great places to pass on information to people about what is happening locally. My grandmother (who lived in a little village) was partially sighted and very frail towards the end of her life and had to rely on neighbours for shopping/ someone collecting her pension when the village store closed. However, she had always been a very independent person and having to rely on people so much got her down at times. That is perhaps the positive side - villages are more community spirited than rural areas and people do help their neighbours out more. But again,… [cont.]

A. Michael Young and Tom Schuller (1991) wrote in their book, 'Life After Work, The Arrival of the Ageless Society, that age has become an oppressive device used to slot people into fixed roles of a stereotyped kind. Also, here's a report published in Canada a couple of years ago, but contains some stuff which you might find helpful. Worth a skim read, I'd say... Interesting choice of research by the way!

A. To those that say it is not a word: Ageism is stereotyping and prejudice against individuals or groups because of their age.[1] The term was coined in 1969 by US gerontologist Robert N. Butler to describe discrimination against seniors and patterned on sexism and racism[2]. Butler defined ageism as a combination of three connected elements. These were: prejudicial attitudes towards older persons, old age and the ageing process discriminatory practices against older people institutional practices and policies that perpetuate stereotypes about older people[3] It's usually the people crying out the loudest that conservatives are racists that call McCain senile and other such nonsense.

What is being done to tackle ageism?
Q. What is being done to tackle ageism (maltreatment and denial of opportunity to elderly men)? Affirmative action needs to be taken but government spokesmen make promises and statements of intent but nothing seems to be getting done. @the prof:- Sorry, I meant to say men AND women. Now how about answering the question. @theshad - What the heck is AARP and what if anything is it doing about ageism?

A. I don't know, but I am very interested in it. Elderly abuse- a consequence of ageism- is such a prevalent and horrible crime.
